Lesson 10 of 10 · 4:40
Build a dashboard for your weekly review
How a dashboard brings counts, charts, and tables together for regular review, from choosing its data and widgets to filtering what you see and deciding who can read it.
What you will learn
- A dashboard brings charts, counts, and tables together for regular review. Its data source sets the scope, widgets measure that work, and access controls decide who can read it.
- The data source is the projects and saved filters you choose when you create the dashboard. Public means your workspace, and Business adds Private, visible at first only to you.
- A widget's property groups the work and its metric measures it. Pro includes the basic widgets, and Business adds the advanced ones, such as Work items table.
- A widget filter narrows one widget. A header filter narrows every widget for a moment, and source, header, and widget filters apply together.
- In View, select a bar to open its work items with the dashboard's projects and filters.
- On Enterprise Grid, share a private dashboard with selected members who can view or edit it, or publish a read-only link anyone can open without signing in.
- Export a dashboard as a PDF, in portrait or landscape, from its options menu.
Keep the measures you review together
0:00A dashboard brings charts, counts, and tables together for regular review. Its data source sets the scope. Widgets measure that work. Access controls decide who can read the dashboard.
Choose the dashboard data
0:29Dashboards start on Pro.
- Open Dashboards in the Work sidebar and choose Add dashboard.
- Name the dashboard.
- Choose its projects, and add saved filters if you want them, such as one that leaves cancelled work out. Those projects and saved filters define the source.
- Choose who can see it, then Create dashboard.
Public means your workspace. Business adds Private, initially visible only to you.
Choose widgets for your questions
1:06To compare groups of work items:
- Choose Add widget, then Basic bar.
- Name the widget.
- Set X-axis to a property, such as State group, and Y-axis to a metric, such as Work item count.
- Choose Save.
The property groups the work; the metric measures it. Grouped by state group, In progress and In review both count under Started.
Add widget has sections for bars, lines, areas, pies and donuts, counters, statistics, work items, cycles, and intake. Pro includes the basic widgets. Business adds the advanced ones, such as Work items table.
A widget filter narrows one widget. A Work items table with the widget filter Priority is Urgent lists only urgent work items, while a bar beside it still counts all of the source's work items.
In edit mode, drag and resize the widgets. The layout saves as you change it.
Read the scope behind each number
2:31A header filter narrows every widget for a moment. Set the header filter Projects to one project, and every widget narrows to that project's work items. Clear it to return to the whole source.
Source, header, and widget filters apply together. Header filters are temporary. To change the saved scope, choose Data source, then Edit source, or edit one widget's filters.
To see the work behind a number, choose View, then select a bar. Plane opens its work items with the dashboard's projects and filters.
Choose who can see the dashboard
3:13On Enterprise Grid, the owner can share a private dashboard with selected workspace members:
- Open Share and choose a teammate.
- Choose can view to let them read, or can edit to change widgets and configuration.
- Choose Share to save.
Invited teammates find the private dashboard under Shared. Their work item widgets reflect the projects and work items they can access.
Enterprise Grid also offers Publish, a read-only link anyone can open without signing in. Review the saved scope before publishing. Unpublish disables the public link. Regenerate link replaces the address and stops the previous link from working.
For a PDF, choose Export from the dashboard's options menu, select portrait or landscape, then Export.
Try it in your workspace
Open Dashboards in the Work sidebar, choose Add dashboard, and choose its projects. Then add a Basic bar with X-axis set to State group and Y-axis to Work item count.

Keep the measures you review together
0:02A dashboard in Plane brings charts, counts, and tables together for regular review.
0:10Its data source sets the scope. Widgets measure that work. Access controls decide who can read the dashboard.
0:20Build one for a team's weekly review: choose its data, add widgets, then filter and share it. Let's take a closer look.
Choose the dashboard data
0:33Dashboards start on Pro. Open Dashboards in the Work sidebar, choose Add dashboard, and name it Payments weekly.
0:43Choose Checkout and Billing, and filter out cancelled work. Those projects and saved filters define the source, 48 work items.
0:55Public means your workspace. Business adds Private, initially visible only to you. Choose Private, then Create dashboard.
Choose widgets for your questions
1:09Choose Add widget, then Basic bar, to compare groups of work items.
1:16Name it Work by state group. Set X-axis to State group and Y-axis to Work item count, then Save.
1:26The property groups the work; the metric measures it. In progress and In review both count under Started.
1:35Open Add widget again. Its sections cover bars, lines, areas, pies and donuts, counters, statistics, work items, cycles, and intake.
1:48Pro includes the basic widgets. Business adds the advanced ones, such as Work items table.
1:56Choose Work items table, name it Urgent work, and add a widget filter for Priority is Urgent.
2:05Save. The table shows 4 urgent work items, while the bar still counts all 48. Widget filters narrow one widget.
2:15Add the rest the same way: three counts and a donut for priority.
2:23In edit mode, drag and resize the widgets. The layout saves as you change it.
Read the scope behind each number
2:34Set the header filter Projects to Checkout. Every widget narrows to Checkout's 26 work items, and Urgent work lists 3.

2:53Header filters are temporary. Change the saved scope through Data source, then Edit source, or edit one widget's filters.
3:03Choose View, then select the Started bar. Plane opens its 12 work items with the dashboard's projects and filters.

4:07For a PDF, choose Export from the dashboard's options menu, select portrait or landscape, then Export.
Return to the same dashboard
4:19The data source sets the scope. Widgets answer your questions, header filters narrow the view, and sharing and publishing decide who reads it.
