Write, connect, and share project context

How a project page keeps the notes and decisions behind your work, from writing it to connecting work items, reviewing changes, and choosing who can read it.

Write, connect, and share project context

What you will learn

  • A project page is a document for your project's notes and decisions: the editor holds the detail, work item links connect it to the work, and page controls manage access and changes.
  • Project pages are available on Free and higher plans, and Plane saves your changes as you write.
  • Public pages follow access to the project, and Private pages are for their owner. Making a page public does not publish it on the web.
  • A page is made of blocks. A To-do list is a checklist inside the document: checking a box changes the page, not a tracked work item.
  • On Pro and higher plans, embed existing work items from the slash menu, and link a page back from a work item with Link pages. On Business and higher plans, selected text can become a new work item.
  • On Pro and higher plans, your team edits a page together and Version history restores an earlier version. On Business and higher plans, inline comments stay on the passage, and resolved threads stay under Show resolved.
  • Copy link shares a page with people who have access. On Pro and higher plans, Publish creates a web link anyone can open, and Unpublish removes it.
  • An archived page is read-only and loses its published version. A restored page stays unpublished until you publish it again.

What a project page holds

0:00

A project page is a document for your project's notes and decisions. The editor holds the detail. Work item links connect it to the work. Page controls manage access and changes.

You can write a spec, connect it to work items, and review it with your team.

Create and write a page

0:24

Project pages are available on Free and higher plans.

  1. Open Pages in your project.
  2. Choose Add page.
  3. Give the document a title.

Plane saves your changes as you write.

Public pages follow access to the project. Private pages are for their owner. Making a page public does not publish it on the web.

A page is made of blocks. Type / to add a heading or a list. Tables keep decisions in rows and columns.

Use a To-do list for a checklist inside the document. Checking a box changes the page. It does not complete a tracked work item.

Connect pages to work

1:17

On Pro and higher plans, choose Work item from the slash menu to embed existing work. The card shows the work item's title and state, and opens its details.

To turn an action in the page into a work item, select it and choose Create work item from selection. Plane creates the work item in your project, and the selected text becomes a mention of it. Open the work item to assign and track it. Work items from selected text are on Business and higher plans.

To link back from a work item, open it, choose Link pages, and select the page.

Review changes together

2:07

On Pro and higher plans, your team can edit a page together. A named cursor shows where a teammate is working as their changes appear.

On Business and higher plans, people with comment access can select text and add an inline comment. The thread stays attached to the passage under review. Reply in the thread, then mark it resolved. Resolved threads stay on the page, under Show resolved.

On Pro and higher plans, you can bring back an earlier version:

  1. Open Version history from the page menu.
  2. Choose a saved version. It opens as a preview.
  3. Choose Restore this version to make its content current again.

Share and retire a page

3:06

When the page is ready to share, Copy link gives your team a link to it. People still need access to the page to open it.

On Pro and higher plans, Publish creates a web link anyone can open. Copy the live link to share the published page. Unpublish removes the web version. It does not make the project page private.

Archive a page when it's no longer in use. It moves to Archived, becomes read-only, and its published version is removed too. Restore brings the page back to the active list. It stays unpublished until you publish it again.

Try it in your workspace

Open Pages in your project, choose Add page, give it a title, then type / to add a heading and a To-do list.
